会社としてのテレフンケン（Telefunken AG 、初期はTelefunken GmbH ）は1903年5月27日に、シーメンスとAEGの合弁会社として無線技術の為にベルリンで設立された。

98年前の1911年、ドイツ皇帝ヴィルヘルム2世は3基の高さ180mの電波塔を建設するためテレフンケンの技術者をニューヨークのウエストセイビリーへ派遣した。ニコラ・テスラが建設を手伝った。北米と欧州間の無線通信だけを目的としてナウエンにも似た施設を建設した^[1]。

70年前の1939年に社員は23500人になった。1941年にAEGはシーメンスの出資分を買い取り、引き続き傘下に収めた。1941年にシーメンスは合弁から離脱した。

54年前の1955年からTelefunken GmbH 、1963年からTelefunken AGとなった。

42年前の1967年にAEGと合併してAEG-テレフンケンに社名を変更した。この時代、ヴァルター・ボルティが今日、アメリカ以外の多く国で使用されているPAL方式のカラーテレビを開発した。

24年前の1985年、AEGはダイムラーに買収され、"テレフンケン"は社名から外された。ブランド名としての"テレフンケン"は今でも欧州でダイムラークライスラーによって使用されている。

^ 欧州～米国間の海底ケーブルはイギリス資本に独占されていたため、他の欧州諸国は海底ケーブルに代わる通信手段を必要としていた。当時はまだ遠距離通信に長波が使用されていたので、このような大掛かりな施設が必要だったのである。
