ヒュー・パジャム (Hugh Padgham)は、イギリス出身のプロデューサー / エンジニア。ミュージシャンの感性を尊重し巧みに引き出す手腕は高く評価され、最も成功したプロデューサー/エンジニアの１人と言える。グラミーなど多くの賞を受けており、1992年には『Mix』誌上の投票で「最も影響力のあるプロデューサー・トップ 10」にも選出されている。

[編集] バイオグラフィ

Advisions StudiosでYESやELPのレコーディング時に、アシスタント・エンジニアとして、マルチトラック・テープ・レコーダーのオペレーターなどでセッションに参加したのが音楽に関わる始まりだった。その後、職場をLandsowne Studiosに移してからもアシステント的な仕事に従事していたが、1978年にロンドンのTownhouse Studiosに移ってからは、チーフ・エンジニアやプロデューサーとしてXTC、ピーター・ガブリエル、フィル・コリンズらのレコーディング・セッションに関わってゆくようになった。

ヒュー・パジャムの名はフィル・コリンズのシングル「In The Air Tonight」で著名になり、1980年代のブリティッシュ・ポップ・ミュージックを発端に、一世を風靡した「ゲーテッド・リバーブ・サウンド」をプロデューサーのスティーヴ・リリィ・ホワイトと共にヴァージン・レーベル・サウンドとして創始した人物としても知られている。ヒュー・パジャムがエンジニアリングを担当し、フィル・コリンズがプレイヤーとして参加したピーター・ガブリエルの3枚目のソロ・アルバムなどでゲーテッド・リバーブは随所に使われている。

彼はレコーディング時におけるミュージシャンとのコミュニケーションには長けていて、多くのミュージシャンからの信頼を集める名プロデューサーであり、時々ミュージシャンのビデオクリップに登場することがあった。

• ポリス

1981年のアルバム『 Ghost in the Machine 』からポリスのプロデューサーとして参加し、アルバム『 Synchronicity 』を経て、スティングのソロ作品なども含め、ポリス及びスティングのサウンド・メイキングに貢献している。スチュワート・コープランドのバス・ドラムに掛けられたアタック以外はほぼNoise Gateでカットされたドラム・サウンドなどはヒュー・パジャム・サウンドの特徴にもなっている。

• フィル・コリンズ

フィル・コリンズのシングル「In The Air Tonight」などで有名になった部分もあり、その後現在に至るまでプロデューサー/ミュージシャンとプロデューサー/エンジニアとしての関係を維持している。1985年にリリースされたアルバム『 No Jacket Required 』では、Roland製のTR-808というドラム・マシーンとフィル・コリンズのドラムスをミックスさせる手法や、得意のゲート・リバーブ処理など様々な先進的なミキシングが施され、当時のミキシング・エンジニアに対して与えた影響は大きかった。そして1989年にリリースされたアルバム『 ...But Seriously 』では、EW&Fのホーン・セクションである、フェニックス・ホーンズの収録方法とミキシングの方法など、フィル・コリンズの一連作品がヒットを連発した要素にもなっていて、フィル・コリンズからの信頼度は非常に高い事がインタビューなどからも伺い知る事が出来る。フィル・コリンズやピーター・ガブリエルとの仕事は、当時フィル・コリンズが在籍していたジェネシスのアルバム制作へも引き継がれ、1980年代には彼らにも数多くのヒット作品をもたらした。

• XTC

XTCの1980年のアルバム『 Black Sea 』制作時には、プロデューサーはスティーヴ・リリィ・ホワイトで、ヒュー・パジャムはチーフ・エンジニアとして参加していた。このアルバム・セッションの中から生まれたヴァージン・レーベル・サウンドとも呼称されるドラム・サウンドはアルバムを通して聞く事が出来て、瞬く間に業界中に飛び火してゲーテッド・リバーブ処理は最先端のエフェクト処理としてミキシング現場ではもてはやされる事になった。1982年のアルバム『 English Settlement 』では、ヒュー・パジャムがプロデューサー/エンジニアとして参加していて、このアルバム収録曲の『Ball and Chain』などでは、ドラムスのルーム・アンビエンス ^[1] 用に立てたマイクロフォンから収音されたドラム・ルーム・サウンドをミキシング時に使用していたSSL社製のミキシング・コンソールに搭載されているListen Mic ^[2] 回路に内蔵されているリミッター回路を通した大胆なドラム・サウンド作成や、リバーブを使ったゲーテッド・リバーブが随所に使われている。

• デヴィッド・ボウイ

1984年発売のアルバム『 Tonight 』にデヴィッド・ボウイとの共同プロデューサーとして参加した。このアルバムでもヒュー・パジャム独特なドラム・サウンドは聞く事が出来て、ベースの存在感とドラムスのゲーテッド・リバーブなどが特徴になっている。シンセサイザーの処理に関しても特徴的なところがあって、フィル・コリンズがどちらかというとシーケンスを多用した作り方になっているため得意とするためか、このアルバムでもシンセサイザーと生楽器のミキシングが聴き所になっている。

• ポール・マッカートニー

1986年に発売された『 Press To Play 』にフィル・コリンズとの共同プロデュースで参加している。ポール・マッカートニーのアルバムとしてはバッキング・トラックで聞く事が出来るサウンドは派手な傾向になっていて、ゲーテッド・リバーブ以外にも、ロング・ディレイやロング・リバーブなど、様々なミキシング・テクニックが聴ける作品になっている。

このリバーブ処理方法は、スティーヴ・リリィ・ホワイトがプロデュース、ヒュー・パジャムがエンジニアリングを担当した1980年のXTCのアルバム「Black Sea」のドラム・サウンドなどに使われていて、ドラムスのルーム・アンビエンスや、ドラムスのリバーブ用にプレート・リバーブなどを使い、そのリバーブ・リターン対して Nise Gate ^[3] を使用した事から呼称されるようになり、今ではデジタル・リバーブなどのデジタル・リバーブレーターに搭載される基本リバーブの１種類にもなっている。

ゲーテッド・リバーブの作成方法は、リバーブなどの残響成分をkepex ^[4] などの Noise Gate 回路を通過させ、リバーブ・サウンドの減衰時間を極端に短く、しかも強制的にGateを閉じさせるようにセッティングする事によって得られる。後にデジタル・リバーブが開発されて行く中で、このリバーブとゲートという２つの機能を１つにまとめたリバーブのプログラムとして開発されて、現在に至っている。

補足として、他の有名なゲーテッド・リバーブの例としては、Noise Gateによる自動的なゲーテッド・リバーブではなく、SSLのコンピューター・オートメーションを使い、リバーブに対して細かくチャンネル・モジュールのカット・データを書き込む事による手動ノイズ・ゲートとしてドラム・サウンドを劇的なサウンドにしている曲がある。パワー・ステーションが1985年にリリースしている『Some Like It Hot』と言う曲がそれにあたり、機械的にリバーブ成分をカットした物と比べ、テンポに合わせて任意のタイミングでリバーブ成分がカットされているため、インパクトのあるサウンドになっていて、ヒュー・パジャムらが作り出したゲーテッド・リバーブの新たな解釈としてミキシングに応用されている。
