Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) (旧称 Jabber^[1]) というインスタントメッセージの核になっているプロトコルで、その仕様は完全に公開されている。そのため、たとえばメールサーバと同じように、ドメインとサーバさえあれば自分専用のXMPPサーバを立ち上げることができる。この点でほかのインスタントメッセージと異なる。
